According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are approximately 4.5 million dog bites in the U.S each year. Bites may occur due to the negligence of the dog owner. Dog bites may occur from a neighbor’s dog off the leash in your neighborhood, a by passer walking a dog on a leash at the park, a dog accompanying someone eating at a restaurant, etcetera. Section 4:19-16 of the New Jersey Statutes states: “The owner of any dog which shall bite a person while such person is on or in a public place, or lawfully on or in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, shall be liable for such damages as may be suffered by the person bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of such dog or the owner's knowledge of such viciousness.” If you have been bitten by a dog, you may be entitled to financial compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering (both physical and mental), and loss of income.
